West Kern Water District custormers are going to pay more for water

Westsiders will be paying more for water beginning next month now that a new rate structure is in place.
But it didn’t come easy.
The West Kern Water District Board of Directors stumbled through a public hearing Tuesday before approving a 10 percent hike in basic rates
About 20 people attended the meeting, some coming to protest a proposed rate increase the district sent its customers last month.
But when the hearing started there was a new proposal handed out, one that was hammered out behind closed doors the night before.
It still contained the 10 percent basic rate increase, but dialed back what users will pay for going over the base amount – 1,000 cubic feet.
Board president Steve Steinhoffer said the average customer “will pay about $20 to $30 more a year.”
