Officers will be looking for speeders, unsafe drivers

Taft Police have added another tool to keep local streets safer.

Officer Robert Gomes started patrolling on a motorcycle this week.

The city purchased two used BMW motorcycles from the Santa Maria Police Department last year and plans to put the second motorcycle on the street when a second officer is trained, said Chief of Police Ken McMinn.

Gomes is riding the motorcycle as part of his regular patrol duties, but he will be looking out especially for speeding and unsafe drivers.

That extra enforcement comes in addition to new school resource officer Casey Ray, who will be patrolling around school campuses in the city before and after school.

A motorcycle traffic officer could become a full-time position, McMinn said.

City Grants Administrator is seeking an Office of Transportation Safety grant to fund the officer’s pay, the chief said.
