Lady Wildcats defeat Golden Valley 11-1 at home

The Taft varsity girls tennis team found the perfect way to begin the season Tuesday afternoon when they handed Golden Valley an 11-1 loss at home.

Taft got off to a flying start by sweeping the singles matches.

Veronica Lehman led the charge by defeating Katerina Lopez 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match.

Chelsey Coke followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Melissa Carr in the No.2 match while Rebecca Laureles defeated Eliza-beth Fonseca 6-2, 6-3 in the No.3 singles competition.

Ashley Lynch kept the momentum going in the No.4 singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lizet Aleman with Cicley Evans taking the No.5 singles match 6-0, 6-1 over Golden Valley’s Crystal Gates.

Courtney Rivas won her match by a score of 6-4, 6-2, but Danielle Cook was involved in the tightest singles match of the afternoon before edging out Ciasa Rivera 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

Amanda Strosnider closed out the sweep by defeating Jessica Rivera 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 9 singles match.

Taft kept the surge going in the doubles portion of the competition when Lehman and Coke teamed up to defeat Lopez and Carr 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match.

Laureles and Lynch defeated Fonseca and Aleman 6-3, 6-1 while Evans and Strosnider defeated Gates and Cynamin Etchells 6-2, 7-5.

Golden Valley got its lone win in the No. 4 doubles competition when Rivera and Michelle Aleman joined forces to defeat Ashly Cricchio and Paige Schoneweis 6-1, 6-1.

Note: The junior varsity match was closer as the Lady Wildcats edged out Golden Valley 7-4 in Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon.
