Lady Indians defeat Valley Christian and Shandon in five sets

The season might be winding down, but the Maricopa volleyball team showed no signs of slowing down this past week by sweeping their matches against Valley Christian and Shandon on the road.

With the two victories, Taft improves to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Coast Valley League.

Even though Maricopa got the victories, it was a battle starting with the Lady Indians five set victory Tuesday over Shadon.

“The girls never gave up and through the fifth game,” said Maricopa coach Reina Cruz.

In the match, Maricopa took the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22 but the Lady Outlaws bounced back to win 25-14 and 25-15. Maricopa had the final say when they took the fifth set 15-6.

Perla Machuca led Maricopa in digs with 39 while Heidi Wise had 30. Crystal Dolley had 25.  Dolley led Maricopa in kills with 7 while Machuca had 5. Kristina Caluag had 4.

Jessica Hampton led the Lady Indians in aces with 5.

Two days later, Maricopa kept their winning ways going with a five set victory at Valley Christian.

“My girls played a tough game on the road,” said Cruz.

Maricopa took the first set 25-16 before losing 25-19 in the second set. The two teams traded sets again with Maricopa winning the third set 27-25 while Valley Christian taking the fourth set 25-23. Maricopa bounced back to win the fifth set 15-9.

Dolley led Maricopa in digs with 51 while Wise had 40. Kristina Caluag and Machuca each had 21. Caluag led Maricopa in kills with 13 while Geer had 11. Dolley chipped in with 7.

Maricopa continues their road trip Tuesday when they travel to Coastal Christian.
