JOHNNIE LAVONNE CULP
1921 – 2009

Johnnie joined the Lord in heaven on October 20, 2009 of a long illness. Johnnie was the daughter of the late Inez Dunn and Lester Boid and the widow of the late Benjamin Taylor Culp. Johnnie LaVonne Boid was born in Oildale, California on July 21, 1921. Her family moved to Taft shortly afterwards, growing up in Taft and graduating from Taft College. In 1939 Johnnie met the love of her life Benjamin Taylor Culp. They were married May 17, 1940 at Benjamin’s mom’s house and had spent over forty nine wonderful years together until Benjamin’s death on June 25, 1988. Benjamin and Johnnie Culp took over ownership of The Blue Ribbon Café. Then she worked at Kern Medical Center and Helen’s Dress Shop.

A very humble, independent Johnnie took into her heart the time to take children and buy them their school clothes and school supplies. Yet nothing sums up Johnnie as much as her quiet ways, her loving heart and her gift of giving to everyone she ran into. Her goodness and generosity will be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; mother Inez Dunn, father Lester Boid; brother Tye Boid; sister Thelma Jean Smith; her loving husband of many years Benjamin Taylor Culp. She is survived by her daughters; Sylvia Carroll and her husband Jim Goss; and Jo Ann Urioste; grandchildren Noelle Carroll, Nickole Carroll, Tim Urioste, James Anthony Urioste and many great grandchildren.
