DON W. GATLIN

Don W. Gatlin of Bakersfield CA went peacefully to be with the Lord and love of his life, Phyllis, on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the age of 72.

He was a Navy man and served in the Korean War on the USS Kearsarge.  He returned home to his sweet heart Phyllis and together they raised three children.  Don was a multi talented man and worked a variety of jobs including a high iron worker, in the Air Conditioning Business and serving as a Baptist Minister.

Over the years Don moved his family several times as the call to a new church would arrive.  Some of the areas they lived in were Amarillo, Lake Havasu, Bakersfield, Taft,  and Roseburg.  He was forced to retire from preaching due to multiple strokes and the onset of Parkinson's Disease.
Some of his favorite past times were fishing, enjoying the beach, singing old hymns, watching Nascar, and playing Bingo.  In his later years you could usually find him enjoying the birds outside his window, doing word search puzzles, watching old westerns or helping with music at the Skilled Nursing Home where he resided.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 44 years, Phyllis Gatlin, a sister, a brother, and his grandson, Derek Allen Gatlin.  He is survived by his sister, Iva Meadows, daughter and son-in-law, Jeff and Gwen Langford of Medford, OR,  daughter and son-in-law, Chris and LaDonna Hickernell of Taft, CA  and son and daughter in-law, Don W. Jr. and Dora Gatlin of Bakersfield, CA , Grandchildren Justine and Christopher Langford, Allen, Nicholas and Ryan Hickernell, Christie Chambless and husband Mark, Jerry Unruh and Great Grandson Samuel Chambless and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

His family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Healthcare for taking such good care of him for the last three years.  He truly felt that he was loved by each of you and loved each of "His Girls".

Don will receive a full military service at the Bakersfield National Cemetery located in Arvin, CA on November 6, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held in Arvin at the Arvin Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m.
