Playoff seeding shaping up with a couple of weeks left

Taft High showed last week that it has its eyes firmly set on the South Sequoia League prize – and maybe a lot more.

Steve Sprague’s Wildcats made a bold statement with their 42-0 romp to sour Wasco’s homecoming festivities.

They hope to make another mark tonight in Tehachapi where the Warriors are not shy about showing everyone why the are the reigning kings of “mountain football – the smash-mouth version of the sport.

A win tonight will put the Wildcats in the catbird’s seat in terms of getting a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Division IV playoffs.

Kingsburg – the only undefeated Div. IV team – figures to hang on to the No. 1 spot bearing a major hiccup over the final three weeks of the regular season.

Washington Union and Kerman are both 5-2 and probably the only schools with a shot at overtaking the Wildcats, even with a loss on the mountain tonight.  Wasco also is 5-2, but that devastating defeat in what Tiger fans hoped beyond all hope would be their finest hour in years isn’t likely to get it done unless Div. III Tehachapi beats Taft and Wasco beats Tehachapi next week.

If Taft gets by the Warriors, the Wildcats have only Shafter and Bakersfield Christian – both 2-5 – left on the regular season schedule.

Exeter, Chowchilla, Roosevelt and Sierra are all 4-3, followed by Dos Palos, Immanuel, Selma, and Central Valley Christian at 3-4.

Shafter, Arvin (1-6) and winless McLane, Coalinga and Granite Hills round out the Div. IV standings.

Central Sequoia leader Kingsburg hosts Kerman (5-2) of the North Sequoia tonight.  The Vikings, who pounded the Wildcats 49-0 in a quarterfinal playoff last year, also have dates left with Exeter (4-3) Nov. 6 and Selma (3-4) Nov. 13.
