Now, the West Side Recreation and Park District staff and architects from the Klassen Corporation are finalizing the new multipurpose center that will replace the Foundry at Third and Main, which burned down more than two years ago.

The new center will be built on land the district purchased just south of the main parking lot for the Community Center on Cascade place.

Thursday night, the district board discussed the proposal with Klassen representatives.
The district plans to have a room for its preschool program, a weight training room, large multipurpose gym, and bowling ally.

The preschool is being moved and will allow the senior citizens area to be expanded, District Administrator Don Koenig said.

The biggest question is how to fit an indoor walking and jogging track into the new building.
That feature was included in the early draft designs, but couldn’t be fitted into current working design being considered.

Koenig said if bids for the project come in under cost estimates, the indoor track could be put back into the design.

The board welcomed that idea.

“Hopefully we could put the track back in, but we have a budget,” said director Robert Wayne said.
