Steven Robert Rouse, age 55, longtime Taft resident and founding member of the local Rouse Brothers Band musical group, passed away of a massive heart attack on Wednesday, March 17, 2010.  He was born in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on January 30, 1955 to Ray and Barbara Rouse.

Steve grew up in the small community of Panama, California, which is a rural area just south of Bakersfield.  He graduated from Taft High School in 1972 and shortly after graduation he co-founded the Rouse Brothers Band.  In 1975 he married Cheryl Jean Byrd here in town.  In addition to his musical endeavors, Steve always worked a day job as well.

Early on, Steve worked for the Taft City School District at the Natatorium and from there he went into the oil industry where he developed a successful career.  He was highly regarded for his expertise and exemplary work ethic.  He was working as a supervisor at Southern Sierra General Engineering at the time of his passing.  Steve was a top-flight bass guitarist and a talented singer and performer.  His specialty was country music but he liked any style of music as long as it was well played.  He was especially fond of the group Steely Dan. He also was the personal manager of the local heavy metal group named Mordor, comprised of two of his sons and a nephew.

Steve is survived by his parents, Ray and Barbara Rouse of Lake Isabella, CA.  He also leaves his three sons, Steven, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV, Spencer Rouse of Shafter and David Rouse of Taft and Steve’s daughter, Donna Fleetwood of Taft.  Steve also leaves a brother, Sam Rouse of Bakersfield; and two sisters, Denise Vaughn of Taft and Debbie Dozier of Wasco, CA.  He also leaves his dearly loved grandchildren, Steven, III, Nathan, Kevin and Emily; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel, 501 Lucard St., Taft, CA.  Burial will follow in the West Side District Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.  www.EricksonAndBrown.com
