Wildcats shoot a 437 to take over first place

The conditions at Horse Thief Golf Course Thursday afternoon were not the type any golfer wants to be playing in.

Yet, despite the 41 degree temperature and the misty fog, the Taft boys golf team got through it by winning the SSL mini Tournament with a round of 437.

“I was very proud of the guys for winning their first SSL tournament of the year,” said Taft coach Mike Goodwin. “The conditions were horrible.”

By winning, the Wildcats take over first place in the league standings with 18 points.

Bakersfield Christian, which finished third in the tournament with a score of 474, is currently second with 16 while Tehachapi, which was three strokes back of Taft, is currently third with 14 points.

Individually, Blake McPherson shot the lowest score of the tournament with a 77. The next closest score was an 81 from a BCHS player.

Stewart Bandy was next among Wildcat players with an 84 while Nick Ellington had an 86. James Gunter was third for Taft by shooting a 94, two strokes ahead of Rigo Nuno. Hunter Liljeroos followed with a 98.

According to Goodwin, only seven golfers broke 90 during the tournament.
