A funeral service will be held in the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, May 23, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. for longtime Valley Acres resident, Calvin Everett McCracken, 89. Private burial in the West Side District Cemetery will take place. Mr. McCracken was born in Grandfield, Oklahoma on April 29, 1921 and passed away in Bakersfield on May 15, 2010. He proudly served his country during WW II as a member of the U.S. Army. Valley Acres had been home for over 50 years. Mr. McCracken had been employed by Chevron for well over 30 years and retired as lead diesel mechanic in 1981. He was an active member of the Taft Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a sergeant with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department Reserve. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and was a licensed pilot. Mr. McCracken was very active in many groups and organizations. He was a member of, and past president of, Taft Motorcycle Club, Taft Horse Club, Taft Rock Club and the Taft CB Club. He was also a member of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue and the Taft Gymkhana. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ruth Ann Moore and his step-grandson, Douglas Wheeler. Mr. McCracken is survived by his wife of 70 years, Alberta; his two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and John Cawelti and Connie and Gary Wheeler all of Valley Acres; his son-in-law, Mike Moore; his grandchildren, Johnny Cawelti, Beverly Woods, Brian Wheeler and Amber Reeves; his step-grandson, Leroy Wheeler; by 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
