FedEx driver sees men using shopping carts to haul away merchandise at rear of store
An alert FedEx driver interrupted an illegal shopping spree in progress at the Taft Kmart store on Wednesday.
Taft Police Sgt. Ed Whiting said the driver's quick action led to the arrest of two men on charges of burglary, conspiracy and possession of stolen property.
The suspects were identified as Christopher Walchock, 33, and Christopher Lee Mason, 24.
Mason is on parole, Whiting said, and was wearing a GPS tracking bracelet.
The two men had taken about $700 worth of clothing and electronics
The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was pulling to the rear of the store off Gardner Field Road to make a delivery just before 2 p.m.
Whiting said the driver saw the two men acting suspiciously near the outside garden section on the south side of the store.
He called police.
Officers arrived and the two men ran but were soon caught, Whiting said.
Officers then determined what was going on.
Whiting said one of the suspects went through the store loading items into a shopping cart, then went to the rear of the garden section and threw items over the fence to his accomplice, who then pushed the cart down a dirt road to a truck parked at the Petroleum Club approximately one-quarter mile away.?Whiting said officers recovered stolen property at the scene and at the suspects' truck.
