Indians defeat Lighthouse Christian by 19 points
The Maricopa football team got their 2010 season off to a flying start Friday evening after they defeated Lighthouse Christian 31-12 in Bakersfield.
“It was a good game,” said Maricopa coach Albert Allen.
After a quiet first quarter, the Maricopa offense came to life by scoring 13 points in the second quarter. The scoring trailed off in the third quarter with the Indians scoring six points. Maricopa put the final touches to their offensive performance by scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Jesus Guitron led Maricopa in rushing with 21 carries for 185 yards. Ricky Buck followed with 6 carries for 131 yards.
On the denfensive side of the ball, Buck and Kris Houston each led the team with 11.
Despite the strong start, Allen says there are several things the team needs to work on.
“Defensively too many missed tackles,” said Allen. “When we get the ball it was litterally one play and we score.”
They will have to work those things out before they face a tough challenge at home Friday evening when the Indians take on the Santa Clarita Christian Cardinals.
“We got to step it up,” said Allen. “We got to throw the ball.”
While the Cardinals were 9-4 in 2009, Santa Clarita Christian was third in the state, 31st nationally and third in the section according to www.maxpreps.com. Santa Clarita Christian carried that success into the first game of the 2010 season by defeating First Lutheran 52-6.
In order to defeat the Cardinals, Allen says Maricopa has to increase their number of plays from 10 this past week against Lighhouse Christian to at least 30.
“Santa Clarita has the ability to pass and run,” said Allen. “It's going to be a hard game.”
The game begins at 7 p.m.
