Lady Indians win by 10 while boys lose in overtime
The Maricopa basketball teams took different paths in their return home Firday evening when the varsity girls won by 10 while the varsity boys lost by one in overtime to the Shandon Outlaws.
The varsity girls roared to life in the first quarter of their 53-43 victory when they scored 24 points while the defense held Shandon to 18. Scoring trailed off in the second quarter but the Lady Indians outscored the Lady Outlaws 9-6.
Shandon bounced back in the third quarter when they scored 17 points to Maricopa's 8. However, the Lady Indians recovered in the fourth with 12 points while the defense limited Shandon to 2.
Heidi Wise led Maricopa in scoring with 18 while Shania Caples had 13. Noemi Gomez chipped in with 8.
Caples led the Lady Indians in rebounds with 11, blocks with 3 and steals with 9. Wise followed in rebounds with 10 while Claudia Servin had 9.
With the victory, Maricopa improves to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the Coast Valley League.
Maricopa boys lose heartbreaker
The Indians could not shake their string of overtime losses after falling to Shadon 45-44.
“We didn't shoot well,” said Maricopa coach Keith Reese. “The game went much like it did over there.”
With the loss, Maricopa falls to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the Coast Valley League.
Maricopa held the early advantage when they outscored Shandon 11-2. The Outlaws recovered with a 15-4 outburst in the second quarter to overtake the lead at 17-15 heading into the half.
Shandon extended their lead in the third quarter by scoring 13 points to the Indians 6. Maricopa stormed back in the fourth quarter with 17 points to Shandon's 8 to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Outlaws edged out Maricopa 7-6.
Jordan Cruz led Maricopa in scoring with 15 while Jesus Guitrom followed with 13.
