Both junior varsity and varsity shutout Shafter

The Taft High girls’ tennis team overwhelmed the Shafter Generals, 9-0, in the Wildcats’ league opener Thursday. Taft’s JV team won by an identical 9-0 score in Shafter.

In the varsity game, Trisha Adams got off to a slow start but beat Ana Pedroza, 6-4, 6-2. Kristen Coke made short work of Maritsa Torres, 6-0, 6-1. Ana Estrada beat Celeste Zamora, 6-2, 6-1. Yeraldin Barrera beat Beatriz Segura, 6-1, 6-2. Mariah Melton bageled Sinay Serrano, 6-0, 6-0. Jessa Dahlgren prevailed against Heidi Lederos, 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Coach Jim Carnal rested his top two players and played juniors Estrada and Barrera against the top two Shafter players, Pedroza and Torres. The Shafter duo got the first set, 6-1. But then the Taft duo settled down and swept the next seven games to win the match, 1-6, 6-0, 10-5. Taylan Erro and Gloria Hartley remained unbeaten in a lopsided 6-0, 6-0 win over Segura and Lederhos. Haley Houghton and JC Yarbrough beat Eva Villegas and Denisse Lorzo, 6-1, 6-3.

Taft improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Sequoia League.

Taft’s JV team beat Shafter, 9-0; 108-12 in games.

Diana Medina beat Dalia Hernandez, 6-1, 6-1. Wendy Herrera beat Angie Rivera, 6-1, 6-1. Lupita Lozano beat Wendy Rincon, 6-1, 6-0. Haven Cook beat Paulett Zavala, 6-0, 6-1. Maria Solis beat Carolina Espinosa, 6-0, 6-0. Roxanna Barboza won by default when Shafter could not field an eight player.

In doubles, Medina and Herrera beat Hernandez and Rivera, 6-3, 6-1. Barboza and Hailey Cook beat Rincon and Zavala, 6-1, 6-1. And, Gloria Okafor and Maria Sanchez beat Melissa Osonrio and Juana Ramos, 6-0, 6-0.

Taft’s JV team improved to 10-0; 1-0 in the SSL.
