Lady Wildcats lose only once during tournament

It may have been the Taft varsity volleyball team’s last tournament of the season, but the Lady Wildcats went out with a bang last weekend after finishing third at the Cal City 3rd annual varsity volleyball tournament.

“I was extremely happy to see how we came together as a team during the tournament,” said Taft coach Adeana McDaniel Furman.

“The girls became more trusting of each other on the court which led us to playing great defense throughout the entire tournament. We were even able to put the ball away on the offensive end when we needed to. It was nice to see all our hard work pay off for our last tournament of the year.”

There were six pools and 24 teams in the tournament with the Lady Wildcats playing in pool D.

Taft had an easy time in their opening two matches of the tournament with a 25-22, 25-11 victory over Silver Valley and a 25-15, 25-11 win over Bishop. The Lady Wildcats completed their undefeated run through pool play with a 25-23 and 25-18 victory over host Cal City.

The Lady Wildcats returned to action Saturday afternoon with a third overall seed in the gold bracket. Taft blew past their first opponent with a 25-13, 25-9 victory over the sixth seeded Lancaster Baptist.

Taft’s perfect run came to an end in the next match when the Ridgecrest Burroughs defeated the Lady Wildcats 26-24, 25-18. Burroughs went on to defeat the No.1 seeded Frazier Mountain Falcons to win the tournament.

The Lady Wildcats bounced back in their final match with a 27-25, 30-28 victory over University Prep.
