Team will take on West Hills-Lemoore
The Taft College men’s soccer team will open Central Valley Conference action at home Friday when West Hills-Lemoore comes to down.
The game will begin at 3 p.m. on the Tenth Street field.
West Hills is ranked sixth in the state and the early favorite to win the conference.
“It looks like West Hills is the team to beat,” Cougar coach Angelo Cutrona said.
The Golden Eagles are 4-1-3, their only loss a 1-0 decision to Lassen (3-1-3) in the season opener.
The Cougars are 4-4-2 after last Friday’s 4-2 loss to Long Beach City College (3-1-2).
Cutrona said it was a case of missed opportunities.
“We had six or seven clear shots on goal but just couldn’t finish,” he lamented. “The first thing their coach said to me after the game was, ‘I don’t know how we won.’
It was just one of those days.”
The Cougar goals were scored by Zayd Flores and Angel Garcia.
Garcia’s goal came when the Vikings were leading 3-1.
“He’ really puts pressure on the defense,” Cutrona said. “He does a good job of seeing the defenders and got off a quick shot.”
“At that point I thought we were in good shape to pull even,” Cutrona said, but the Vikings scored on a fast break.
Flores’ goal came after LBCC had grabbed an early lead.
Cutrona said his team needs to work on defense. It was the second time in the last three games the Cougars had given up four goals — both on the home field.
“Defensively, we just can’t keep giving up that many goals and expect to win. We really need to focus on one game at a time.”
