Daisy Guitron gets a hat trick plus one in victory
On a perfectly quiet Sunday fall afternoon in Taft, the Taft Flamengo girls travel soccer team and Guadalajara created some excitement with a match on the Taft High soccer fields.
Once the dust had settled it was Flamengo that came out on top with a 4-2 victory over Guadalajara.
“It wasn’t as coordinated as I would like it to be,” said Taft coach Luis Ponce. “A win is a win.”
Taft threatened to break open the match early with a series of shots but they could not get the ball into the net.
About 11 minutes into the match, Taft finally got on the scoreboard thanks to the first of Daisy Guitron’s three goals.
With an assist from Maria Saldana, Guitron followed up with another goal late in the first half to double Flamengo’s lead.
Taft had a couple of more chances to score in the half but they were unable to score.
Guadalajara cut the lead in half just minutes into the second half. Guitron added to her goal total with a spin move and dribble before scoring from short range.
Guadalajara threatened to cut the advantage to one but a penalty kick hit the top of the goal post and bounced over.
Guitron completed her scoring spree by speeding through several defenders to score Taft’s final goal.
Guadalajara, though, was not through. About two minutes after Guitron scored her last goal, Guadalajara cut the lead in half.
Taft had another to chance score in the final moments of the match but Erica Saldana’s shot hit the Guadalajara goalie, hit the right goal post and stayed out.
“We took complete control in the second half,” said Ponce.
Taft will play their final two matches in Bakersfield over the next two Sundays.
