Belridge places second

McKittrick School made it three consecutive Whiz Kids championships by capturing the 2012 academic competition for rural middle schools held Feb. 23 at Piute Mountain School in the Caliente Union School District where the competition originated many years ago. McKitrrick also won the title in 2010 and 2011. Belridge Elementary School finished second and Caliente Union School District was third.
Participating schools included Belridge Elementary, Elk Hills, McKittrick, Midway and Caliente Union School District. Each school selected six students for their teams for a total of 30 participants. The event, modeled after the high school Academic Decathlon, featured competition in five areas — Math, Social Studies, Science, Essay and Super Quiz.
The host school, Piute Mountain (Caliente Union School District), won the Science team title. McKittrick captured both the Math and Super Quiz events.
Super Quiz matched teams against each other. Each student had to answer four of 24 questions within an allotted time based on curriculum from the social studies book, “A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver,” written by E.L. Konigsburg. It is a fictitious story illustrating the excitement of living in twelfth-century England and France, through the recollections of Eleanor of Aquitaine, the wife of two kings.
Individual titles were contested in Essay and Social Studies categories. McKittrick’s Amy Roth was victorious in the Essay category and McKittrick’s Rocky Mankini was the Social Studies winner.
Caliente Superintendent/Principal Kathleen Hansen said, “This event is designed to promote and celebrate academic excellence, and I believe it is an outstanding time for bright and aspiring students to shine.”
