Wildcat varsity and junior varsity shutout Highland
The Taft Union High School tennis teams got shutout wins over the Highland Scots on Tuesday. Taft’s varsity won 12-0 while the JV won 9-0.
“Highland lost its top five players from last year and only had one returning varsity player,” Taft coach Jim Carnal said. “Most of the matches were like playing beginners. This was one of the most one-sided matches I remember: 144 games to 14.”
In No. 1 singles, Kyle Fleming bageled Juan Mendoza, 6-0, 6-0. David Burleson beat Duncan Myers, 6-1, 6-0. In a battle of sophomores, Chuy Gutierrez beat Mikel Meneses, 6-2, 6-1, and Cristo Miranda beat Jose Varela, 6-0, 6-1.
At No.6 singles, Philip Taylor beat Dominique Ramirez, 6-1, 6-0. Rogelio Santiago beat Antony Taamneh, 6-1, 6-0. Cameron Bunch bageled Jovel Ramirez, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Fleming and Burleson beat Mendoza and Myers, 6-0, 6-1. In the closest match of the day, Gutierrez and Arreguin beat Meneses and Varela, 6-0, 7-5.
Miranda and Taylor beat Coleman and Dominique Ramirez, 6-0, 6-1. Bunch and Kyler Fields remained the only two undefeated Wildcats, with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Taamneh and Jovel Ramirez. Bunch ran his season record to 3-0 while Fields is 2-0.
The JV story had a similar plot at Highland’s home court. Highland only fielded five players. A full team is eight. Highland only won a total of 11 games.
At No. 1 singles, Oscar Martinez beat Chow Vong, 6-1, 6-1. Isaiah Sharp beat Ray Miranda, 6-1, 6-0. Randiel Sasi bageled Adrian Vargas, 6-0, 6-0. In the only close match, freshman Pastor Magana outlasted Tony Delgado, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. Brian Ortega shut out David Parker, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Sasi and Samuel Kendrick beat Chow and Ray, 6-0, 6-1. Ortega and Jesus Lopez beat Vargas and Delgado, 8-0. Gilbert Orozco and Justin Covington won by forfeit.
Both Taft teams improved to 1-1 while the Highland teams dropped to 0-1.
