  • George Hollingsworth was born in Taft and although he moved a lot he always felt that the San Joaquin Valley was his home.  In 1982, after 35 years with Standard Oil/Chevron, George retired in Bakersfield with his wife, Mary, where they lived for the rest of their lives.  George had a larger-than-life personality that filled the room with his presence.  He was a man of strong ideas and outspoken opinions.  He also had a great sense of humor and he loved to tell jokes.  George was a superior athlete who excelled in sports and games of all kinds.  His kids have fond memories of him coaching and playing with them, as well as organizing the neighbor kids into games of dodge ball or baseball.  After he retired, George continued to play two of his favorite games—golf and bridge—and made some wonderful friends in the process.  When the love of his life, his wife, Mary, was struggling with cancer, George would try to lift his spirits by counting his blessings.  Among those blessings he cited his three children, Mike, Mary Ann and Margie, who “turned out pretty good,” his career with Chevron and especially his 65 years of marriage to his beloved Mary.  When Mary died on February 27, 2012 George was no longer able to find any blessings on this earth and wanted only to join his wife in heaven.  On April 7th  he got his wish. George successfully disproved the axiom that “no one dies of a broken heart.”  George will be deeply missed by all the surviving family who loved him.  A graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in the West Side District Cemetery in Taft.  There are no visitation hours scheduled and the arrangements are under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.  To convey condolences or sign an online registry, please visit www.EricksonAndBrown.com.
