Its all part of the 2012 Taft Relay for Life
Relay for Life’s focus on cancer survivors took the spotlight at Wednesday’s Taft Chamber of Commerce Sit and Sip coffee klatch.
Shannon Jones and Jessica Miller are coordinating the celebration of life portion of the fund-raising event that will be held May 19-20 at Patterson/O’Brien Field on the Taft High campus.
The pair is planning a cancer survivor’s breakfast that will be held April 29 at the Historic Fort.
“It will be a time for cancer survivors to socialize and share their stories of survival,” said Jones. “We also are planning to have an inspirational speaker.”
Jones and Miller encourage all cancer survivors in the community to register for the event.
“We had 116 survivors last year,” Miller said. “We ordered 160 T-shirts this year. We hope to run out of shirts. That will be a good thing.”
Cancer survivors can register on-line (www.relayforlife.org/taftca) or at the Chamber office, 400 Kern St.
Chamber director Kathy Orrin encouraged people to attend the event that raises money for the American Cancer Society.
“There is something going on every minute, and it’s so much fun,” she said. “It was a neat experience. I would encourage you, if you’ve never gone, to go.”
Jones said 39 teams have registered so far to take part in the 24-hour walking relay around the oval at Patterson/O’Brien Field.
“The goal is to raise $100,00,” she said. “We have $29 so far.”
