Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in the West Side District Cemetery for Taft native, Gene Fields, 76. Pastor Rodney Wikoff of the West Hills Church of the Nazarene will officiate, Mr. Fields was born to Homer and Cora Fields on July 15, 1935 and he holds the distinction as being the first baby born in the West Side Hospital. He passed away at his Taft residence on May 25, 2012 after a long battle with cancer. He was raised and educated in Taft and graduated from Taft Union High School in 1953. He went to work at the Taft Midway Driller where he worked until 1956 when he accepted the position as a police officer at Taft Police Department. In 1960 he became a California Highway Patrolman and retired in 1991. Mr. Fields was a current member of the West Hills Church of the Nazarene and a former member of the Taft First Baptist Church where he had been a deacon for many years. He enjoyed fishing, RVing, golfing and cruising and traveling with his wife and family. Mr. Fields is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dovie Fields of Taft; his daughter, Katherine Lee and her husband Dan, of Taft; his son, Darren Fields and his wife, Lori, of Bakersfield; his granddaughters, Krista Long and husband, Billy, of Taft and Breanna and Tiffany Fields of Bakersfield; his great granddaughter, Isabella Long of Taft; his sister, Donna Mae Williams of Oklahoma and his longtime friends, Dub Jennings of Bakersfield, Bud Garner and Dick Winslow both of Taft. There are no visitation hours scheduled and the services are under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home.
