In the middle of a record-setting flight, Chip Yates had little opportunity to celebrate his achievement.
While in the air, Yates' electric plane's battery died and he had to guide his plane back down to the ground.
But he made it safely, and could celebrate his world-record flight above Inyokern, where he flew his plane more than 200 miles per hour, as measured by a GPS unit.
Yates was later greeted by Assemblywoman Shannon Grove, who was in town to tour Inyokern Airport, which is vying for Unmanned Aerial Systems research project.
Grove Met Yates by his plane in one of the airport's hangers, and immediately called Gov. Jerry Brown's office to give him the news. Yates spoke with a representative from the governor's office.
Yates has already broken speed records on the ground with an electric motorcycle. He is also working to retrace the famous flight Charles Lindbergh took from New York to Paris in an electric plane.
