Taft scores all 12 points in road victory

 The varsity girls’ tennis team got off to a good start with a 12-0 rout of the Golden Valley Bulldogs Thursday. Taft’s JV team won 11-1 at home.

    In the varsity match, junior Taylan Erro outplayed sophomore Jackie Lopez, 6-2, 6-1. Ana Estrada double bageled Valerie Martell, 6-0, 6-0. Yeraldin Barrera beat Pam Martinez, 6-1, 6-3. Gloria Hartley beat Alex Marquez, 6-1, 6-4. Diana Medina beat Nykeea Moreno, 6-2, 6-2. Lupita Lozano beat Josefina Baltazar, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Haven Cook beat Danielle Aguirre, 6-1, 6-4. In the most competitive match of the day, beginner Melissa Gore beat Christine Rubaleado, 6-0 in the first set, but barely lost, 6-7 (6-8), in the second before winning the third-set tiebreaker, 10-7.

    In doubles Erro and Estrada beat Lopez and Marquez, 6-2, 6-3. Barrera and Hartley took out Martinez and Martell, 6-3, 6-0. Medina and Lozano, last year’s No. 1 JV doubles team, disposed of Baltazar and Sarina Shelton, 6-0, 6-1. And JC Yarbrough and Cook double bageled Aguirre and Kyleya Bell, 6-0, 6-0.

    The story had a similar plot in the JV contest. Gloria Okafor beat Fatima Moreno, 6-1, 6-2. Jenifer Rivera double bageled Ceci Torres, 6-0, 6-0. Maria Sanchez dispatched Kassandra Cervantes, 6-1, 6-1. Karina Amaya beat Dalila Ojeda, 6-1, 6-1. Liliana Noriega beat Sam Puskarich, 6-4, 6-0. Beginner Paige Gaylord beat Edrie Martinez, 6-1, 6-4. Beginner Stephanie Torres beat Susana Calderon, 6-2, 6-1. And, beginner Destany Rocha lost the first set to Jackie Arranaga, 4-6, but fought back to win the second set, 6-3, before dropping the super tiebreaker, 7-10.

    Taft’s JV swept the doubles, which were played as first-one-to-eight-games  pro sets. Okafor and Vicky Alvarez beat Moreno and Julia Sosa, 8-5. Rivera and Cassandra Toro beat Torres and Cervantes, 8-6. Sanchez and Luz Cisneros beat Ojeda and Puskarich, 8-4. Amaya and Lupe Salomon beat Martinez and Calderon, 8-1.

    The match was the season opener for both schools. On Tuesday, Taft’s varsity opens the league season by traveling to Bakersfield Christian, while Taft hosts the JV match. On Thursday, McFarland’s varsity and JV team play at Taft.
