Lady Indians sweep Northwest Christian in the three sets

There's nothing better than starting off a young season with a victory. The Maricopa varsity girls volleyball team turned it up a notch recently when they defeated Northwest Christian in three sets.

"The girls shook off their nervousness of the first game of the season," said Maricopa coach Kayla Erickson. "Our serving was really well as well as our passing."

Maricopa opened the match with a 25-11 victory in the first set before sailing past Northwest Christian 25-3 in the second set. The Lady Indians closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third set.

Noemi Gomez led Maricopa in points with 20 and aces with 13. Gomez also had four digs along with two kills and two hits. Emily Phillips followed in points with 10 while having each five digs and five aces.

Courtney Downey and Brooke Owens each had nine points and three aces. Downey led in digs with seven while Owens had two digs and one hit. Kayla Houston had seven points and six aces. She also had seven kills and 11 hits.
