Volunteer workday will help needy with home repairs

Rodney Wykoff said the list of jobs for the West Side Christian Ministers Association's first Project Restore work day is getting close to completion with just two months to go.

The WSCMA is organizing an all-volunteer effort to help fix the homes of needy people in the Taft area.

Project Restore is targeting houses that need repairs or alterations that can be completed in one day for homeowners who can't afford the necessary work.

The WSCMA is targeting a maximum of nine projects for the Nov. 12 workday and has a list so far of nine projects that are “80 percent verified.”

Wykoff, pastor of the West Hills Church of the Nazarene and president of the WSCMA, said it's part of the plan for the churches to help the community.

“We want to be givers, not takers,” Wykoff said. “We just want to bless people, plus it's a great way to help our community.”

Wykoff said the group is verifying that the resident is the property owner and in need of help, and that the job is feasible and can be completed in one day.

The WSCMA is still seeking sponsors to help pay the cost of materials as well as volunteers and people seeking help.

You can also nominate someone who you believe needs help.
