Cerritos is ranked No.9 while Cougars are ranked 10
Taft College travels to Cerritos College in Norwalk this afternoon for what shapes up as an interesting tussle between teams ranked in the state’s top 10.
No. 9 Cerritos is 3-1-0 in the early season while the Cougars are undefeated at 4-0-1 and ranked 10th.
The teams do have some history.
Cerritos defeated the Cougars 2-1 in a Fresno downpour in 2006 to win the state championship. The Falcons also wore the state crown in 2008.
TC won the title in 2007 and played for the championship in 2009, losing to Mt. San Antonio 2-1 on a hotly disputed handball call that gave the Mounties the win.
The Cougars tuned up for today’s clash by using first half goals within two minutes of each other for a 2-1 win last Friday over visiting Los Angeles Mission College.
TC dominated the action in the second half and kept the Eagle goalkeeper busy but couldn’t finish.
Juan Carlos Gonzalez scored the first goal in the 36th minute, putting in a header off a long crossing pass from Ramiro Barraza.
Two minutes later Gerardo Gonzalez took an Eddie Lopez pass, outmaneuvered a defender with some nifty footwork and rifled a shot into the net.
The Cougars led 2-0 at the break and despite the frustration on offense played solid defense.
Counting today’s Cerritos game the Cougars have four non-conference outings left before launching Central Valley Conference play Sept. 28 at West Hills-Lemoore.
The Cougar women’s team (3-3-1), meanwhile, also is in the southland today taking on East Los Angeles (1-2-2).
