Lady Wildcats defeat Shafter and Robert F. Kennedy 9-0
Taft’s varsity girls’ tennis team beat Shafter, 9-0, there on Wednesday and Robert F. Kennedy High School of Delano, 9-0, at home on Tuesday. Taft’s JV beat Shafter, 9-0, and RFK, 8-1.
In the varsity match at Shafter, the No. 1 singles was a battle between seniors named, “Ana.”
Taft’s Ana Estrada was more consistent than Ana Pedroza and won, 6-1, 6-0. Taylan Erro beat Denisse Lorza, 6-1, 6-0. Yeraldin Barrera beat Sandra Perez, 6-2, 6-0. Gloria Hartley beat Dalia Hernandez, 6-1, 6-0.
Lupita Lozano was the first off the court after double bageling Teresita Urias in record time, 6-0, 6-0. Diana Medina beat Paulette Zavala, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles pro-sets, No. 3 Barrera and No. 5 Lozano handled No. 1 Pedroza and No. 2 Lorza, 8-4. Medina and Roxi Barboza beat Hernandez and Zavala, 8-2. Shafter forfeit No. 3 doubles because the team only had seven players instead of the mandatory eight.
Taft’s No. 8 JC Yarbrough and No. 9 Melissa Gore bageled No. 3 Perez and No. 5 Urias in an exhibition game, 8-0.
In games, Taft had 96 to Shafter’s 13. Tuesday’s match was even more one-sided, with Taft winning 96 games to RFK’s 5.
Estrada double bageled Andrea Simenta. Erro did the same to Sabrina Buccat. Barrera beat Fabiola Cisneros, 6-0, 6-1. Hartley had the same score against Mayra Valle. Lozano double bageled Kenia Orozco. Medina did the same thing to Faye Tabalanza.
Taft won all three doubles pro sets, 8-1, with Hartley and Lozano winning at No. 1, Medina and Barboza winning at No. 2 and Yarbrough and Gore winning at No. 3.
Taft’s varsity improved to 5-0 in the South Sequoia League; 8-3 overall.
Next Tuesday, Sept. 18, Taft’s varsity travels to Arvin while the Bears’ JV team comes here. On Thursday, Sept. 20, both the varsity and JV travel to Delano to face Cesar Chavez.
The JV contests this week mirrored the varsity results with straight single-set wins against Shafter. In games won, it was Taft 96 to Shafter’s15.
Against RFK Tuesday, Taft’s JV won 8-1; 93 games to 14.
The only game RFK won was the No. 1 doubles when freshmen beginners No. 9 Destany Rocha and No. 11 Cassandra Toro fell to No. 1 Brianah DeLeon and No. 2 Xena Sanchez, 8-5. Taft’s No. 1 JV player, Haven Cook, remained unbeaten with a perfect 12-0 record.
