  • Abraham L. Trop was born in Schenectady, New York, on October 29, 1925. Abraham graduated early from high school in Albany, NY, in 1943, in order to enlist in the US Army during WWII. He fought in the European Theater of Operations, was among the first to land in France on D-Day, was a lieutenant in a combined armored-infantry regiment during the conflict, and was decorated several times. After the Germans surrendered, he served in Bavaria, and was involved in Allied administration and reconstruction efforts, prior to his honorable discharge. He returned to the United States in 1946 and graduated from the NY State Teacher’s College (now SUNY-Albany) with a BA in 1949 and obtained a MA in History in 1950, prior to moving to New Mexico, where he enrolled for a time in the PhD program at the University of New Mexico.  Abraham had a long teaching career, where he concentrated on teaching History, Government, and Western Civilization, including 22 years at Taft Union High School, in Taft, CA, prior to retiring in 1986. He was also an instructor for the UCSB extension program, and collaborated with faculty at Bakersfield State on a number of projects. During his retirement, he travelled extensively, was an avid gardener, and was an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Golden Empire. In 1992, he founded a local music appreciation group, which has met regularly on a monthly basis since then. He passed away, unexpectedly, on Sept. 8, 2012, while preparing to travel to Montana for a volunteer service project.
Abraham is survived by four children, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother and a sister. A celebration of his life will be held at his home on Sunday, September 23, from 1 – 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Habitat for Humanity.
