  • The Taft JV girls’ tennis team went 2-3 in the Wasco Tennis Classic Friday and Saturday, but it was closer than it sounds. Two of the losses in the doubles pro-set tournament were ties that the team lost on tiebreakers. Taft finished fifth among the 10 schools.
Taft thumped Shafter, 4-0; lost to Frontier, 3-1; tied Tehachapi, 2-2 in sets and 24-24 in games but lost the No. 1 doubles, which was the final tiebreaker; tied Arvin, 2-2, but lost in games 27-22; and beat host Wasco, 3-1.
Taft’s top half of the roster did well, with No. 1 Haven Cook, No. 2 Jen Rivera, No. 3 Gloria Okafor and No. 5 Karina Amaya all going 4-1. Number 4 Maria Sanchez also had a winning record, 3-2.
Coach Doug Taylor played all 13 girls in the tournament and the team struggled at the bottom with the bottom eight going a combined 5-10.
