  • Taft tennis continues roll with victory

  • Varsity shuts out Arvin to remain perfect

  •  The varsity girls’ tennis team remained undefeated in league with a 9-0 drubbing of the Arvin Bears Tuesday.
    In the one-sided match, Taft won 108 games to Arvin’s 20.
    At No. 1 singles, Ana Estrada beat Yesenia Santoyo, 6-1, 6-3. Taylan Erro beat Karen Clemente, 6-0, 6-1, Yeraldin Barrera shut out Jazmin Zuniga, 6-0, 6-0. Gloria Hartley double bageled Gracie Falomir, 6-0, 6-0. Lupita Lozano was again the first player off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 rout of Alondra Lule. Diana Medina beat Alondra Soto, 6-3, 6-1.
    Taft sat its top three players in doubles. Hartley and Lozano beat Santoyo and Falomir, 6-2, 6-2. Number 6 Medina and No. 7 Roxi Barboza beat No. 2 Clemente and No. 5 Lule, 6-1, 6-1. JC Yarbrough and Melissa Gore beat Esmeralda Ponce and Kassandra Aguilar, 6-2, 6-3. Ponce and Aguilar had been 7-0 going into the No. 3 doubles match.
    Taft improved to 9-3 overall; 6-0 in the SSL. Arvin dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the SSL.
    The JV match had the same end result but was a bit closer.
    Taft swept the top four singles. Haven Cook beat Danielle Castro, 6-1, 6-1. Jen Rivera beat Brenda Zaragoza, 6-4, 7-5. Gloria Okafor beat Iyacsiri Barrera, 6-1, 6-3. Maria Sanchez beat Alyssa Hilts, 6-0, 6-2. Taft lost the next two in third-set tiebreakers. Arvin’s Joanna Hernandez came from behind to beat Karina Amaya, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 10-7. Arvin’s Alicia Clemente outlasted Liliana Noriega, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 10-8.
    In doubles, Cook and Rivera gave Taft the win by dispatching Castro and Hilts, 6-0, 6-4. Sanchez and Amaya lost to Arvin’s Zaragoza and Barrera, 6-2, 6-2. Taft’s freshmen beginners Paige Gaylord and Stephanie Torres beat Vitali Cruz and Michelle Cruz, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
    Taft’s JV improved to 9-6 overall; 5-0 in the SSL.
