Lady Wildcats defeat Wasco in first league match

A lot of factors were at play when the Taft junior varsity volleyball team competed in their first home match Tuesday afternoon. Yet, the Lady Wildcats were not fazed after they defeated the Wasco Tigers 25-17, 25-20.

“We did great,” said Taft coach Taylor Miller. “Communication today was great.”

The Lady Wildcats were on cruise control in the first set by scoring eight unanswered points thanks in part to a pair of aces from Emily Salazar. Wasco chipped away at the lead to trail 10-5.

Taft took off again with six straight points to lead 16-5 highlighted by a pair of aces from Chelsey Voliva. The Lady Tigers roared back to cut the deficit to 17-13. After Taft pulled away again with seven unanswered points, Wasco made one final push with three straight points to trail by seven but Taft scored the final point to take the first set.

Taft continued their run into the second set with a 5-1 run. The Lady Tigers roared back to tie the score at six before they took an 8-6 advantage.

After Taft tied the score at 10, the teams tied each other one more time at 13. Wasco followed by taking their last lead of the game at 14-13.

Taft came alive with a 7-0 run thanks to an ace to lead 21-14. Wasco whittled the lead down to four at 22-18 and 24-20 but Taft held off the charges to win.

Johanna Wilke had 3 kills, 2 aces and 8 points. Cailtyn Emberson had 2 kills and 2 blocks while Cassidy Cloud had 3 kills while Voliva had 3 aces and 8 points. Salazar had 12 points and 4 aces while Amanda Ortiz had 3 blocks and a dig. Desirae Navarro had 2 digs.

The Lady Wildcats return to action Wednesday when they take on Golden Valley at home. The game begins at 5 p.m.
