Cougars take on Fresno City City College in their next match

Taft College got off to a good start in the Central Valley Conference volleyball race Wednesday night with a road win over Columbia College.

The Cougars swept the Claimjumpers 25-16, 25-10, 25-20.

The win pushed TC’s record to 8-3 overall as the Cougars get one final non-conference outing Saturday in the San Diego City College tournament before returning to CVC action, Wednesday with their first home match of the season.

And it will be a tough one.

TC will host five-time defending conference champion Fresno City College, currently ranked fourth in the state.

In the Columbia sweep, sophomore outside hitter Chanel Cantere was the spark with 11 kills and 10 digs.

Madison Lawley had six kills and four stuff blocks and freshman Tiffany Mapusaga five kills and nine digs.

It was the debut match for freshman Tyra Williams, who missed the first 10 matches because of a back injury.  She finished the night with four kills and seven digs.
