The Taft High girls’ varsity and JV tennis teams remained undefeated in league with wins over the Cesar Chavez Titans Thursday. Both the varsity and JV matches were played at Chavez.
In the one-sided match, Taft’s varsity won 9-0; 96 games to Chavez’s 25.
At No. 1 singles, Ana Estrada beat Evelyn Iglesias, 6-0, 6-2. Taylan Erro beat Alyssa Resalvo, 6-1, 6-0. Yeraldin Barrera beat Raycheal Cruz, 6-4, 6-1. Gloria Hartley beat Britney Caricungan, 6-0, 6-2. In the closest match of the day, Lupita Lozano beat Arielle San Antonio, 6-3, 6-4. Diana Medina beat Elizabeth Martinez, 6-2, 6-4.
The doubles pro sets were more one-sided. Number 3 Barrera and No. 5 Lozano beat No. 1 Iglesias and Resalvo, 8-1. Number 4 Hartley and No. 9 Melissa Gore beat No. 4 Caricungan and No. 5 San Antonio, 8-1. Roxi Barboza and JC Yarbrough shut out Cruz and Atziri Hernandez, 8-0.
With the league season at the halfway mark, Taft improved to 10-3 overall; 7-0 in the SSL. Chavez dropped to 5-5 overall.
“Taft and Bakersfield Christian, 5-1, are battling for first. Wasco, Chavez, Arvin, Shafter, McFarland and Kennedy are trailing,” Taft coach Jim Carnal said.
The JV match had a similar ending but was a bit closer, 7-2.
Taft swept the singles. Haven Cook beat Diana Caliboso, 8-3. Jen Rivera beat Maria Beltran in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (10-7). Gloria Okafor beat Janet Angel, 8-1. Maria Sanchez beat Gisella Avila in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (10-7). Karina Amaya beat Emily Rubio, 8-4. Chavez only had six players instead of the required eight and had to forfeit the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches.
Chavez won the No. 1 and No 2 doubles matches. Beltran and Angel beat Okafor and Liliana Noriega, 8-4. Avila and Rubio beat Paige Gaylord and Stephanie Torres, 8-7 (10-1).
Taft’s JV improved to 10-6 overall; 6-0 in the SSL.
