Lady Wildcats shut out Robert F. Kennedy 11-0
Taft’s varsity girls’ tennis team remained a perfect 11-0 in the South Sequoia League with a 9-0 drubbing of the 0-11 Robert F. Kennedy Thunderbirds. Taft’s JV remained a perfect 10-0 with a 9-0 win over RFK. Both games were played in Delano.
In the varsity No. 1 singles match, Ana Estrada beat Andrea Simenta, 6-1, 6-0.
Taylan Erro did the same to Sabrina Buccat, as did Yeraldin Barrera over Fabiola Cisneros. Diana Medina was the first player off the court with a quick double bagel, 6-0, 6-0, over Mayra Valle. In the closest varsity match of the day, Gloria Hartley beat Kenia Orozco, 6-2, 6-1. Roxi Barboza beat Faye Tabalanza, 6-1, 6-0.
Taft easily won all three doubles pro sets. Medina and Lupita Lozano shut out Buccat and Cisneros, 8-0, Hartley and Barboza beat Valle and Tabalanza, 8-1, and JC Yarbrough and Melissa Gore blanked Briana DeLeon and Karla Arroyo, 8-0. Barboza remained unbeaten for the season at 18-0 while Gore is a perfect 10-0. Taft improved to 14-3 overall.
The story was similar in the JV match. Haven Cook improved to 27-1 with an 8-1 win. Gloria Okafor won 8-2, as did Maria Sanchez. Liliana Noriega and Lupe Salomon each shut out their opponents, 8-0. RFK forfeit No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Jen River and Noriega won at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. In the closest match of the day, Paige Gaylord and Luz Cisneros came from behind to win, 8-6. Taft’s JV improved to 14-6 overall.
On Tuesday, Taft’s varsity hosts McFarland. McFarland does not have a JV team. On Wednesday, Taft’s varsity hosts Arvin.
On Thursday, Taft’s JV travels to Arvin. All the league games are scheduled at 4 p.m.
Taft’s varsity will play in Division II of the Lewis Cup on Friday and Saturday,Oct. 12-13 at Bakersfield High. On Friday, at 11 a.m., Taft plays Centennial and at 2:30 p.m. plays Tehachapi. On Saturday, at 9:30 a.m., Taft plays BHS, and at 2:30 p.m. plays Monache of Porterville.
“This is a great opportunity for us to play two good Division I teams in Bakersfield and Centennial and two top Division II teams in Tehachapi and Monache,” Taft coach Jim Carnal said. Taft is a Division IV team.
“This will give us some tough competition heading into the Valley team playoffs, which begin Oct. 23.”
