Suspect ran until two men grab him and hold him. He now faces drug dealing charges

Two South Taft men who don't like people trespassing on their property helped Kern County Sheriff's deputies arrest a man on drug trafficking charges and recover a bag of methamphetamine.

Deputies were on patrol in South Taft Monday when they observed a man sitting under a palm tree near Buena Vista and General Petroleum.

As they approached, Sgt. Martin Downs said, the man, later identified as Steven Andrew Gates, 41, got up and started running.

The deputies gave chase and Gates jumped several fences as he cut through yards.

He ran southbound into the 900 block of Buena Vista and into another yard.

That's where it all ended.

Downs said two men living there, who weren't identified, ran outside, grabbed Gates and held him down until deputies arrived.

"They said they don' t know him, they don't know why he was there and they don't like him trespassing," Downs said.

The bag contained nearly 3 grams of suspected methamphetamine, Downs said.

The men also pointed out a small, clear plastic bag that Gates took from his pocket and set on the ground, Downs said.
Gates, 41, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance and concealing evidence.
