Lady Wildcats defeat Cesar Chavez 8-1

The Taft High girls’ varsity and JV tennis teams finished the South Sequoia League season undefeated with wins over the Cesar Chavez Titans Tuesday. Both the varsity and JV matches were played here.

Taft’s varsity team beat Chavez, 8-1, to go 14-0 and win the school’s first league tennis title. The JV team beat Chavez, 6-3, to go 12-0 and win its first outright league title. The JV had tied with Tehachapi at 9-1 last year and had shared the league title once before that.

The varsity match was a one-sided affair. At No. 1 singles, Ana Estrada shut out Evelyn Iglesias, 6-0, 6-0. Taylan Erro beat Alyssa Resalvo, 6-1, 6-1. Yeraldin Barrera beat Raycheal Cruz, 6-1, 6-0. Diana Medina beat Britney Caricungan, 6-1, 6-1. Lupita Lozano double bageled Elizabeth Martinez, 6-0, 6-0. Chavez won at No. 6 singles. “I put my No. 9 player, who has only been playing for two months, against a player with two years experience,” Coach Jim Carnal said. Clair Tomboc beat Taft’s Melissa Gore, 6-2, 7-5.

 In doubles, Estrada and Barrera beat Iglesias and Cruz, 6-1, 6-2. Erro and Gloria Hartley beat Elizabeth Martinez and Fernanda Martinez, 6-0, 6-1. And, Roxi Barboza and JC Yarbrough beat Itzel Hernandez and Atziri Hernandez, 6-0, 6-1.

Taft’s varsity improved to 20-4 overall. Chavez dropped to 7-7 in the SSL; 7-9 overall.

In league, Taft was 14-0, followed by Bakersfield Christian at 12-2, Wasco at 10-4, Chavez and Arvin at 7-7, and McFarland, Shafter and Robert K. Kennedy trailing.

The JV match had a similar ending but was closer.

Haven Cooke beat Diana Caliboso, 6-3, 6-4. Jen Rivera beat Jessica Han, 6-2, 6-3. Gloria Okafor came back from a 1-4 deficit to beat Maria Beltran, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Maria Sanchez crushed Mary Munoz, 6-1, 6-0. Liliana Noriega lost to Chavez’s Gisella Avila, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6. Karina Amaya came from behind to beat Janet Angel, 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.

In doubles pro set matches, Cook and Rivera beat Han and Lorena Squillante, 8-5. That brought Cook’s record to a team-leading 31-1. Chavez closed out the scoring with wins at the bottom two doubles. Caliboso and Dalila Castro beat Paige Gaylord and Stephanie Torres, 8-3, and Avila and Emily Rubio beat Cassandra Toro and Destany Rocha, 8-4.

Taft’s JV, led by coach Doug Taylor, improved to 16-6 overall.
