The top-seeded Taft High varsity girls' tennis team beat the No. 8 seed Hanford Bullpups, 7-2, in the first round of the Division IV Section (Valley) playoffs here Tuesday.
Taft won the best-of-nine match after the singles round.
"Hanford only brought seven players to the eight-player contest, which put them at an immediate disadvantage," Taft coach Jim Carnal said. "Hanford's No. 2 player could not make the match and she was not replaced so the Bullpups had to forfeit the No. 6 singles match."
At No. 1 singles, Ana Estrada outplayed Kathy Reall, 6-0, 6-2. Taylan Erro dispatched Samantha Halley, 6-0, 6-1. Hanford earned its only point in singles when an athletic sophomore, Aubry Frietas, upset senior Yeraldin Barrera, 6-2, 6-4. Diana Medina was the first player off the court after double bageling Morgan Joyner, 6-0, 6-0. Gloria Harley beat Ragine Abahd, 6-0, 6-1. Melissa Gore got the forfeit win at No. 6 singles.
With the match won, Carnal held out some top players and played his No. 3 doubles at No. 2 to give them some stiffer competition. Number 1 Estrada and No. 4 Medina shut out No. 1 Reall and No. 4 Joyner, 6-0, 6-0. Number 7 Roxi Barboza and No. 8 JC Yarbrough were outmatched and outplayed in a 6-1, 6-3 loss to No. 2 Halley and No. 3 Frietas. Number 6 Lupita Lozano and No. 9 Gore beat No. 6 Megan Brown and No. 7 Amber Borsati, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) to close out the scoring.
Taft, 21-4, will host the No. 4 seeded Woodlake Tigers, who beat No. 5 seed Selma, 5-4. That semifinal match will be here at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Valley finals will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.
On the other half of the bracket, No. 2 seed Liberty of Madera won by default over Granite Hills of Porterville. Number 3 seed Strathmore beat No 6 seed Wasco, 8-1.
