  • You've got two haunted houses in Taft to visit if you want to get your fright on this Halloween plus a fun, safe way for the kids to go trick or treating.
Taft High School students have turned the basement at 504 Center Street into a chamber of horrors for the holiday. It's opened Wednesday and will be open from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. It costs only $5.
A few blocks away, the Lions Club has  brought its popular haunted house back from the great beyond.
It's located at  the intersection of Second and Main Streets.
It opens at 6 p.m. each night starting Saturday and continuing through Halloween night.
    Admission is just $5.
For the kids, Taft College students are planning a safe trick-or-treat at the two campus dorms Halloween night.
TC Associated Student Body (ASB) and the students who live in the residence halls on Wildcat Way and Ash Street are combining their talents, according to Myisha Cutrona, adviser to the student governing body.
“We want this to be a safe and fun event for the community,” she said.
    Activities begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Ash Street dorms at 715 Ash St. is putting on a door-decorating contest that will be judged by visitors.  The dorm room that gets the most votes wins the grand prize.
The dorm on Wildcat Way between the high school tennis courts and the county library is being transformed into a haunted house.
“If your stomach can handle the horror, you are welcome to attempt to walk through the Haunted Hall of Taft College,” the promotional flyer reads.
“We recommend children under 10 be accompanied by an adult,” Cutrona said.  “There will be ghouls and goblins at every corner ready to have a scare-fest.”
