Cougar netters lose 5-set battle at Porterville
- Team falls to 6-4 in conference play
For the second time this season the Taft College volleyball team fell in five sets to the Porterville Pirates.
The scores were 23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 15-13.
“It was a good game,” said head coach Kanoe Bandy. “We had opportunities but didn’t take advantage of them. It was frustrating.”
Despite the loss the Cougars remain in third place in the Central Valley Conference at 6-4 behind undefeated Fresno and twice-beaten Porterville. Both of PC’s losses were to Fresno.
Bandy singled out the work of sophomore middle blocker Ono Taotofi, who had 14 kills and eight stuff blocks.
“Ono was unbelievable,” Bandy said. “She played so well.”
Chanel Cantere led the Cougars with 16 kills and on the defensive side with 17 digs.
Sina Mapusaga had eight blocks and Madison Lawley two.
Tyra Williams had 13 digs, Kristen Kamakele 10, Kerstyn Randall eight and Mapusaga six.
Setter Randall had 38 assists.
“Our serve/receive was our weakness,” Bandy said. “We didn’t pass very well either.”
The Cougars are on the road Friday to play West Hills.
