The Taft varsity volleyball dodged one bullet earlier in the week.
They couldn't escape the second one Thursday night in a 23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-15,14-16 loss to the Sierra Chieftains in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-CS Division IV volleyball playoffs in Taft.
Sierra and Taft battled to four ties early in the first set before the Lady Chieftains reeled off 10 straight points. Taft battled back to get within three at 16-13. Taft eventually closed the gap to two at 20-18. After Sierra built a 24-19 advantage, the Lady Wildcats narrowed the lead down to one at 24-23 but Sierra scored the final point.
The Lady Wildcats caught fire early in the second set with a 5-1 run but Sierra battled back to tie the score at five. Taft and Sierra tied each other five more times before Taft pulled way with a 7-1 run. Sierra narrowed the deficit to five a couple of times. However, that was as close as they got in the second set.
After Taft scored thre first three points of the third set, Sierra came back to tie the score at seven. Sierra countered with an 8-1 run including eight unanswered.
Taft fought back to get within two at 18-16. Sierra countered with a 7-2 run to close out the set.
After Sierra jumped out to a 4-1 lead, Taft bounced back to tie the score at four. The set remained close until Taft went on a 7-0 run. Taft went on to win the set bu 10.
The teams tied each other seven times in the final set before Sierra scored the final two points to win the set and match.
