A Kern County firefighter was injured fighting a fire that destroyed a garage in Taft Tuesday night.
The firefighters, whose name was not released, fell into a hole in a garage on the 600 block of Lucard.
He was taken to Kern Medical Center for injuries to his torso.
The firefighter is assigned to station 21 in Taft.
He was part of a crew battling a fire that destroyed one building and for a time threatened to spread to several other structures.
The fire broke out about 6 p.m. and the structure was 75 percent involved when firefighters got on scene.
The small wood frame and tin structure had a small living quarters in it and a garage area, Battalion chief Kirk Kushen said.
After the fire was knocked down, the firefighters were overhauling the burned building when one stepped into the subterranean chamber, possibly used for changing oil, Kushen said.
His injuries are not believed to be very serious.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is estimated at $25,000.
