  • Walnut -- Taft College was unable to recover from a goal in the first 38 seconds of the game and lost to three-time defending champ Mt. San Antonio in 2-1 Friday in the semifinals of the state JC soccer championships
"That quick goal just killed us," said Cougar coach Angelo Cutrona.
After scoring just seconds into the match, the Mounties took a 2-0 lead later in the first half.
Armondo Ochoa scored both Mt. SAC goals -- the second on a penalty kick just outside the box with 5:34 left in the 1st half.
The Cougars scored with 3:16 left in the half when Juan Carlos Gonzales broke free on the left side, took a crossing pass from Julio Lopez and shot one past the goalie into the right corner of the net.
That's the way the game ended as the Cougars were unable to score any more against the tough Mt. SAC defense.
Cougar goalie Roberto Gonzalez was a key for the TC defense with 7 saves.
"Roberto Gonzalez had a great game for us," Cutrona said.
The heartbreaking loss was the first for the Cougars, who entered the championship playoffs with a 17-0-5 record and ranked No. 1 in the state
