Although the Wasco High Tigers waltzed though the season with a 13-0 record, the Tigers were overlooked when state prep bowl game match-ups were released.
Wasco – and most of Kern County prep football fans – had hoped the Tigers would be picked to play in the Division III bowl playoff game on Saturday.
Wasco’s luster may have been tarnished a bit in the eyes of the bowl selection committee after the Tigers had to score a fourth quarter touchdown to defeat stubborn Bakersfield Christian, 29-22, in the Central Section title game.
The Tigers ripped the Eagles 49-0 when they met in their regular season South Sequoia League game.
Strength of schedule was cited by the selection panel as the primary reason for overlooking Wasco.
Madison High of San Diego (12-1) and Monrovia High (12-2) will play Saturday at Monrovia with the winner facing either Marin Catholic of Kentfield or Sutter High Dec. 15 in the Div. III state bowl championship in Carson.
Kern County’s two other section champs – Div. II Garces (12-1) and Div. III Ridgeview (11-2) also were overlooked.
Garces hammered Sanger 49-24 and Ridgeview clobbered Dinuba 55-14.
However, Div. l Central Section champion Clovis North (12-1) was selected to play at Long Beach Poly on Saturday in a regional playoff. Poly defeated Mater Dei last Saturday in Anaheim Stadium.
All state championship bowl games will be played in Carson on Dec. 15.
