Santa Claus still as popular as ever in Taft
- Kids line up in advance to see Santa and Mrs. Claus
Santa Claus never goes out of style, that's for sure.
If you had any doubt, all you had to do was go the Westside Furniture Tuesday night where several hundred kids and their parents lined up for a few moments and a picture of Santa and Mrs. Claus.
It was so busy, Santa almost ran out of candy canes to hand out to the children.
Santa was supposed to be there at 6 p.m., but people started lining up an hour earlier.
"One woman told me she got there at 5 p.m. so she could be first in line," said Shannon Jones, event coordinator for the Taft District Chamber of Commerce, who organized the event.
There were already 40 to 50 people lined up by 5:30 p.m.
Santa didn't arrive until a few minutes after 6 p.m., and Jon Weatherly, owner of Westside Furniture, said the crowd was getting restless.
Soon, the line was so long it snaked around the store in a large circle and more and more people came.
"It was fun. It was crazy," said Chamber executive Director Kathy Orrin.
Jones said they took 135 photos of children with Santa, but that also includes photos with several children as families got group portraits.
She estimated there were more than 400 parents and children that attended, but the event still wrapped up about 8 p.m.
Santa's visit was part of a series of activities held on Center Street during the Christmas season to bring people into the business district.
