Victim killed in single-vehicle accident west of New Cuyama

A Santa Maria man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Highway 166 west of New Cuyama Thursday night.

The man, a 23-year-old whose identity has not been released yet, was travelling westbound on the highway east of Pine Canyon when his Volkswagen drifted to the right while he was negotiating a curve, a California Highway Patrol news release said.

The driver turned back to the left and lost control of the vehicle, which then swerved back across the eastbound lane and then off the roadway and up an embankment, overturning and coming to rest on its right side.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was fatally injured.

The crash occurred about 9:50 p.m. and the weather was cold and dry, the CHP said.

Pine Canyon is located just east of Tepusquet Road and just west of the U.S. Forest Service fire station.
