Taft College opens up with game against Cosumnes River
After taking a three-week hiatus, the Taft College women’s basketball team swings back into action Saturday for its final non-conference skirmish.
The Cougars (5-9) travel to Sacramento to take on Cosumnes River (9-3) of the Big 8 Conference.
TC opens Central Valley Conference play next Wednesday when they host Reedley College (6-8) in the Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center.
Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
Head coach Tyrone Taylor said his team needed the time off after a grueling 14-game pre-conference campaign that included four tournaments. All 14 games were on the road.
“We needed some time off to just rest up,” he said. “And it gives Erica (Evans) and Schalon (Baysinger) a little extra time to heal up.”
Both players missed the last four games because of leg injuries.
Evans was averaging 18.6 points per game when she was injured Dec. 1 in the second game of the Hartnell tournament.
With those two out, center Bezait Anbesse and guard Zanoria Echols helped take up the slack.
“We put a lot of pressure on them to step up,” Taylor said.
Anbesse, a 6-foot-2 sophomore center, is averaging 12.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. She has the second best field goal percentage among CVC players at 51.4.
Echols, a 5-9 guard/forward, is averaging 11.6 points per game.
Fresno City College is easily the favorite to win another conference crown. The Rams are 13-3 in pre-conference action and No. 1 in northern California.
