Taft wins by four goals
There is always some concern that a team might have some rust coming out of a long break.
The Taft junior varsity girls soccer team showed no signs of it during a 5-1 victory over the Bakersfield Christian Eagles in Bakersfield Friday evening.
“I thought our passing was excellent,” said Taft coach Ryan Hickman. “It’s a good way to start. I am pretty happy with our output.”
With the victory, Taft improves to 9-3-1 overall.
It didn’t take long for the Lady Wildcats to get on the scoreboard.
After several shots were unsuccessful, Karen Quinonez had a corner kick go off the Bakersfield Christian goalie’s fingertips for the first goal of the match at the 28:30 mark.
The Lady Eagles nearly scored the equalizer at about the 21 minute mark but a Lady Wildcat defender deflected the shot.
Less than two minutes later, Aydee Alvarez took a direct shot at the net for a goal.
A minute later, Quinonez nearly added to the Lady Wildcat lead with a fast break but the shot was stopped by the Lady Eagle goalie.
Bakersfield Christian finally got on the scoreboard with a goal at the 13:57 mark.
Quinonez nearly countered but her penalty kick hit the right crossbar.
Quinonez finally broke through with two minutes to go in the half when she found the back of the net.
Unlike the first half, the Lady Wildcat offense trailed off with the first goal coming at the 15:35 mark of the half. Taft would not score again until the 4:15 mark of the half when Alvarez scored.
Taft returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Delano to take on Cesar Chavez. The match begins at 4:30 p.m.
