  • Anyone who was concerned that the Taft varsity girls basketball team might be rusty after a three week layoff, didn’t have to worry Monday night after the Lady Wildcats handed the Arvin Bears a 58-23 loss in Taft.
“The girls played very well,” said Taft coach Chuck Hagstrom. “I had some concern coming off a three week break but they came out with intensity and were very aggressive.”
With the victory, Taft improves to 13-2 overall and 1-0 in the South Sequoia League.
Taft showed off their dominance in the opening quarter when they erupted for 16 points while holding the Arvin offense to five. The Lady Wildcats kept up the pace in the second quarter with 17 points to the Lady Bears nine.
The theme continued into the third quarter with Taft scoring 14 points to the Lady Bears’ seven. Taft turned up the defensive heat in the fourth quarter by limiting Arvin to two points while the offense scored 11.
“Our defense held Arvin to only 23 points and our half court trap set us up for several easy baskets,” said Hagstrom. “We needed to start league with a win and we actually secured a very convincing win.”
Four players were in double digits for Taft with Kennedy Kunce leading the way with 16 points. Caitlin Emberson followed with 11 while Chanel Tremain and Halle Neher each had 10. Neher also was 6-for-9 from the free throw line.
Kunce also led Taft in rebounding with 10 and steals with 5. Neher followed in rebounding with 7 while DeeDee Iotamo followed with steals with 4. Overall, Taft had 18 steals and 11 assists.
Taft will square off against 10-2 Cesar Chavez Wednesday in Delano. The game begins at 6:45 p.m.
